Our gardening activities and our project: “Who Lives in Our Garden” have allowed us to become more acquainted and connect more deeply with the wildlife in our backyard. These positive interactions sparked a desire to invite even more creatures to enjoy our outdoor space. We discovered that to attract more animals to our garden it would require to provide food and shelter for them, and the best way to do that would be to have more native plants into our garden.
Thanks to a grant from Woolworths, we were able to redesign our yard, creating a better environment to welcome even more life into our outdoor area. The participation from everyone has been incredible! The children from all classes were deeply involved in the project, helping us research, learn about the local fauna and flora, and choose the best species for our garden.
When it was time to roll up our sleeves, every one, from toddlers to preschoolers, displayed an enthusiastic gardening spirit. They worked the soil, prepared the seedlings, watered, replanted, fertilised, and cared for our plants.
Our native garden also inspired our young artists to represent and document what they saw and experienced. Their wonderful creations helped us to keep track of the changes in the biodiversity encountered in our backyard. This project has been a wonderful way for children to learn and experience firsthand the important role different species play in maintaining and supporting healthy ecosystems.
