Nature can be much closer than we think, even in small spaces we can discover whole ecosystems that can be observed and learned from. Life can find its ways even in a plant pot. If you are lucky enough to have a garden or a green area in your school you can be sure to find interesting things to explore with your children.
At our preschool the fascinating world of interesting creatures that live in our garden does not go unnoticed by the children’s attentive and curious eyes. Their natural interest in the life encountered everyday in our yard provide a never ending source of discovery and learning.
Our ongoing inquiry “Who lives in the garden?” delves deeper into the life of the creatures that inhabit our backyard, such as spiders, snails, bees, beetles, worms, slatters, mosquitoes, birds, slugs, caterpillars, and butterflies. These wonderful creatures teach us about life cycles, ecosystems, food chains, biodiversity, resilience, and the interdependence of all living beings in nature.
Our team of enthusiastic bug hunters, dedicated pet keepers, and keen researchers make the most of our daily interactions with our local wildlife.
By observing, researching, questioning and hypothesising, discussing, representing and registering our discoveries, we learn more about each creature. Through art and story telling children share their discoveries with each other and the rest of our learning community. As they experience meaningful and positive interactions with these animals, they gain a greater understanding of their place and value in the environment.
As a result of this approach, our little ones become more prone to care for other beings and grow in their respect, connection, and responsibility, towards Nature and all the life that inhabits it.
It is a real privilege to support them on this fascinating and rewarding learning journey of discovery and connection with nature and it’s creatures.
