Growing our food is not only a rewarding experience, but also has positive implications for the environment and for our health and well-being. In today’s society, many of us have become detached from the land and have lost touch with the sources of our food.
Teaching children about where their food comes from is an important step in promoting healthy eating habits and a more sustainable food system. Planting and harvesting what we will eat with children help us all to gain deeper appreciation for the work that goes into producing our food.
At our preschool we have been discovering the satisfying process of growing our own food. Planting and harvesting what they can eat has been giving children a better understanding about food and what takes to get it on our plates. What contributes to a more wholesome relationship with what they eat and, as a bonus, more interest in eating what they plant!
